CBT & DBT are evidence - based types of talk psychotherapy. CBT helps clients identify negative, inaccurate and maladaptive thinking and behavior to view challenging situations more clearly in order to respond in a healthier and more effective way. DBT helps teach how to live in the moment, regulate emotions, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, and improve relationships with others.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing therapy is an evidenced-based trauma therapy which allows clients to shift their perspective or negative held belief of experienced traumatic events to reduce the vividness and emotional response related to the traumatic memories as well as present day distress. Eye movements help the brain reprocess and shift activity in the brain to bring a sense of "lightness" after completion.
Walk and Talk therapy can be offered as an alternative option outside of the therapy office or computer screen for clients who are interested in this modality. This may be on a mutually agreed upon trail or park where we walk together and focus on the present moment while engaging in psychotherapy. Being in nature together side by side can create a different experience and allow the client to feel more comfortable experiencing and expressing thoughts and emotions. Research shows that walking may free themselves from feeling "stuck."
Mindfulness -based cognitive therapy incorporates focusing on the present moment without judgement. This can help people review their thoughts without getting caught up in what could have been or what may occur in the future in order to let go of negative thoughts.
“While the mind usually shuts down during a traumatizing experience, the bodily sensations associated with immobilization and helplessness carry the memories of having absolutely no control over the outcome of your life: the fate of trauma survivors is lived out in heartbreak and gut-wrenching sensations.”
― David Emerson, Overcoming Trauma through Yoga: Reclaiming Your Body
Incorporating yoga breathwork and techniques in sessions to offer a somatic intervention can help clients develop a greater sense of autonomy within themselves and work through trauma that is held in the body. It can build confidence, establish safety and lessen negative response symptoms. (ongoing yoga certification practice training in progress)
Various topics for therapy groups are occasionally offered - details are posted here when available.
